You would assume a guy with such nice manners would have been raised by a pair of wonderful parents. Well, for Morty, that was not the case. No, he was never abused, only neglected. Mr. and Mrs. Devereau just never paid poor little Morty much attention. He learned to live with it though, and was content with raising himself. Morty has always enjoyed solitude, and has always spent a large amount of his free time researching Pokemon legends, his favorite being Ho-Oh the rainbow bird. On the downside, because of his fondness of solitude and researching, Morty never had many friends growing up. Well, actually he never had any friends at all. His peers considered him an antisocial oddball, and at times Morty got picked on. The teasing got even worse, however, after the day Morty wandered into the Burned Tower of Ecruteak in order to catch his first Pokemon when he was ten. Walking over some floorboards that could no longer bear any weight, Morty fell straight through. Pain surged through his body once he landed and his vision began to spin into black nothingness. Strangely, a voice told him it wasn't his time yet, and the pain began to fade away. Morty then awoke to a Gastly hovering patiently over him, and so Morty had his first Pokemon. The Gastly wasn't the only thing Morty left the Burned Tower with. From that day on, it's seemed to Morty as if he had some sort of sixth sense. He can read people exceptionally well, and sense their auras. Oh, and he seems to attract Ghost Pokemon. Unfortunately, trying to explain this to people earned Morty the title of the town freak, until one day the wise old gym leader of Ecruteak came down with a fatal illness. This gym leader was highly respected by everyone in the city, and little did anyone know he had his eyes on Morty for many years. By this time at the age of seventeen, Morty was passed down the title of the Ecruteak City Gym Leader. Once the shock died down, the people of Ecruteak suddenly seemed to understand Morty, though Morty sees right through it. Now at age twenty-three, Morty has proved to be a successful Gym Leader, and people have grown to like him for who he really is. He still enjoys solitude and has become an expert of Pokemon legends, but his love for Ghost Pokemon and teaching lessons to young trainers who challenge him for a badge outweighs everything.
