While her father worked in the nearby city of Saffron and her mother read magazines at her Department Store job, the young girl played in the dirt in their backyard, examining plants and flowers. It seemed like a perfect little world was there, blossoming in the soil. When her parents finally did come home, they took little interest in their daughter’s obsessions. Instead, they paid the babysitters and sat down with take-out, asking about the weather and complimenting the food. One morning, the babysitter didn’t show up. Erika, ever curious, wandered onto Route 7 alone and found herself cornered by a hungry Persian. Luckily for her, however, a Gloom came to her rescue, scaring away the Persian and leading her back to the city. Needless to say, things had to change. The babysitter was fired, and in came a new caretaker - a grandmother she had never met, the one that her parents had always told her was crazy. While there was truth in those words, to Erika she was simply amazing. For one, she encouraged her granddaughter’s love of plants and grass Pokémon. Impromptu lessons were held in the garden, where Erika first learned the names of common herbs. She even let her keep the Gloom that saved her. Soon came other lessons; her old-fashioned grandmother thought it her duty to teach the young girl about manners, traditional Japanese dress, and the art of flower arranging. It came as a relief to the child, the knowledge that there were prescribed ways to interact with people and live life, things she had never understood as well as she did greenery. One other lesson she was given, however, touched her even deeper. “Construction again,” her grandmother said, shaking her head at the neon cones. “Isn’t that building tall enough?” “Mama works there!” Erika said, smiling. The older woman sighed and mentioned something that shocked her forever; “I feel sorry for the Pokémon around here.” Suddenly, explanations were needed, and thus the young girl learned how humans impacted nature. She decided that day that something had to be done. At ten, Erika began to train, remaining close to home when she could. As she got older, her soft demeanor, devotion, and fashion sense made her locally famous. Soon, the gym leader retired, leaving an open spot. The mayor nominated Erika, and she stepped up to the challenge, making the gym a flourishing garden full of cultured (or to-be-cultured) young ladies. Over time, the young woman came to love the gym and the trainers under her… but one thing still bothered her. If she was here accepting challengers, who was out there working to help the environment?
