Growing up in Castelia City, he was actually quite a happy boy. He would often roam into Route Four (Which, at the time, was completely barren) and befriend Pokemon. It was there that he found his first, and his only true, friend, Mozart the Deino. Since it was so far out of its natural habitat, Ghetsis became sympathetic with it, and it became his first real Pokemon. He then filled up his team with Pokemon in the desert, and decided that he wanted, above all else, to become the champion of the Unova League. During his journey, he would have a fateful encounter with a certain orange-haired trainer also optimistic about his odds of becoming the champion. Gaining a friendly (At that time) rivalry, he continued on his quest to become the very best. Like no one ever was. But his ideals were slowly changing as he traveled. Seeing how hurt his Pokemon would become from battles, he slowly began to dislike battling more and more. He wanted to eliminate it not only for himself, but for the entirety of the world. Reading up on the history of Unova, he learned of the two brothers who fought over the fate of Unova, and the legendary dragons who helped them. Wanting to lead the world into a new era, he managed to find the Light and Dark stones. He pleaded to Alder to help him with his vision, but the future Champion had become disheartened by the death of one of his Pokemon. Ghetsis saw this as a sign that he SHOULD help, but the other trainer did not agree, saying that it was caused by a disease. Now, finding himself without any help, Ghetsis traveled to Dragonspiral Tower, determined to control Reshiram and Zekrom in order to achieve his goals. Despite having both the Light and Dark stones, the two refused to fight for him. Angered beyond belief, he sent his Pokemon in to subdue the legendaries. Needless to say, it went poorly. The attacks from two-thirds of the Tao Trio shook the foundation of the Dragonspiral Tower, so much so that the floor collapsed under Ghetsis and his Pokemon. It was only due to Mozart evolving at the exact right time that he was able to survive, albeit with his right arm destroyed and his right eye scarred… the rest of his Pokemon were not so lucky. The experience broke Ghetsis’ mind. The optimistic boy who had set out on this journey to end violence was gone. All that was left was a bitter man who came to hated the world, jealous that others should be able to have their own Pokemon. All he strived for now was power. Absolute, complete power. Somehow, someone felt it necessary to have a child with him, giving birth to N, his only son. The mother died from childbirth. Delighted that he could work through someone else, Ghetsis began systematically molding him into the perfect candidate for the “hero of Unova”. That way, he could systematically rid people of their prized Pokemon through political pressure. By the time his plan came into fruition, he no longer cared about the Pokemon he had lost… it was all about gaining power. Power that he never had. Unfortunately for him, his plans failed, and he was arrested by the authorities. Luckily, the Shadow Triad was able to rescue him, despite him losing his Pokemon in the process. For years, he went into seclusion in order to restart his plans, despite not having any Pokemon to help spur them on. That was until he was visited by a certain Giovanni Familgia, who had big plans regarding all five of the regions. Something about a Team Ultimatum. As an extra incentive, Giovanni had gone through the trouble of returning his confiscated Pokemon to him, though Ghetsis was sure that he would have gotten them back eventually.
