Caleb Wales knows this as well as anyone, for it happened to him almost a decade ago. At eighteen years old Caleb was a wild card contendor for the Kanto League Championship. With eight years of training behind him and a powerful team at his side, there was no doubt that the young man from Blackthorn had it in him to take home the gold. Victory Road changed that with a landslide, a mangled leg and a month in the hospital. By right he shouldn't have even survived and he'd only evaded death with the help of his Tyranitar. With the Doctors telling him he'd never walk again, Caleb returned to his home town of Blackthorn. Releasing and giving away all but six of his pokemon, he took up a life of solitude on his late grandfather's farm high in the mountains. Shutting out those close to him except his pokemon, he spent the following year wallowing in depression and painkillers. He was defeated.. or was he? It was a cold fall night when a number of team rocket grunts came for his pokemon, having followed him and his Aerodactyl back from a hospital visit. With the threat of losing those he was closest to at hand, Caleb managed to call up what was left of his former strength. With the aid of his pokemon team and the calvalry sabre hanging over his fireplace, Caleb managed to fight off the assault on his home. Team Rocket weren't about to leave without collateral and using their pokemon they torched his house with him inside of it and with his wheel chair in shambles there was only one way out. Despite everything that had been told to him over the following year, Caleb managed to rise to his feet and in intense pain walk the thirty feet out the front door and away from the blaze. There was little that was able to be salvaged from the fire. However instead of being broken by another tragedy Caleb was instead reinvigorated by what he'd done that night. Instead of moving he took up residence in the bar and despite his doctors orders started to work to regain his ability to walk. It took physical therapy, surgery, a knee brace and all of his strength but two years later he was back on his feet. While he could neither run or jog, he was able to walk for long distances with little pain and with a cane he could even hike up inclines. He'd also spent every day training with the sabre in case of team rockets return and was quickly becoming a skilled swordsman. No longer on medication of any kind and having conquered his limitations, Caleb applied to a local college and after two years graduated with a masters in criminology and a bachellor's in forensic science. It wasn't long until he applied to and was accepted by the pokemon league. It wasn't long until his skill as a trainer had him working abroad and with the arrival of Team Ultimatum on the scene the League quickly put his abilities to use. |
